Directory
Who to ask, and where the map continues.
Local organisers and studios first, then the international resources that carry the form's listings, archives and festivals.
Contact Improvisation has no central directory because it has no central body. Local listings are held by the organisers themselves. The closest thing to a global index is the CI World Jam Map at contactimprov.com, which lists sessions by country and state, including a Florida page covering Miami, Sarasota, Gainesville and Jacksonville.
International resources
These are the sites that actually hold the form's listings, archives and gatherings. Each one was opened and checked when it was added here.
- Contact Improvisation World Resource
The international hub for the form, run since the 1990s: a world jam map, an event calendar, a teacher directory, member listings and a links index.
- CI World Jam Map: Florida
The community's own Florida listing. It is the closest thing to a South Florida jam directory that exists, and it is maintained by whoever sends corrections.
- CI Global Calendar
A shared, multilingual calendar of CI classes, jams, workshops and festivals worldwide, posted by the organisers and teachers themselves. The best single place to look for something happening anywhere.
- Contact Quarterly
The journal that grew out of the 1975 newsletter, and the form's main written archive for four and a half decades.
- CQ CI Contacts List
Contact Quarterly's referral directory for locating CI classes, jams and practitioners, organised by country and US state.
- Earthdance
A long-running movement and improvisation centre in Plainfield, Massachusetts, hosting workshops, residencies and jams.
- Touch&Play Global
Retreats, workshops and relational learning built around contact and consent practice.
- Contact Improvisation Dance Canada
A national CI resource and listing site, useful as a model for how a country's jams get organised and published.
- Contact improvisation (encyclopaedia entry)
A starting point for the form's definitions, lineage and influences, with references.
Teachers
There is no register of Contact Improvisation teachers, anywhere, because the form was never trademarked and never certificated. That was a deliberate decision in 1975 and this site is not going to invent the authority that the form's own founders refused.
So the honest position on Miami: no Miami-based Contact Improvisation teacher could be confirmed from their own published information at the time of writing. Individual names appear in legacy CI member directories from around 2010 and in social media posts, and none of those are current enough to publish. The people who actually know are the organisations below, and the fastest route is to ask the one hosting the class you are thinking of attending.
If you teach here, send us your page. A teacher listing on this site means one thing only: this person publishes what they teach and where. It is not an endorsement, and it cannot be, in a form with no assessor.
Studios, companies and organisers
Every one of these was opened and checked. Where an organisation is contact-adjacent rather than a contact improvisation outfit, the entry says so.
Karen Peterson Dancers · Physically integrated dance company
Miami
A Miami company working with dancers with and without disabilities, running the Forward Motion Dance Festival and residencies across Miami-Dade schools. Its studio work has historically been connected to contact practice in the city, and its founder's name is the one attached to the Miami jam still listed on the CI World Jam Map. The company itself is active and current; the jam listing on the world map is not dated, so this site does not present it as running.

Dance Arts Miami · Dance studio (ballet, modern, social, adult classes)
Miami
Hosts the weekly Contact Improv — ALL LEVELS class and runs a broad adult programme. Its own schedule page did not surface a dedicated contact improvisation entry when checked, so the class listing is verified through Eventbrite and Meetup rather than here.

Kama Flight · Movement studio and 501(c)(3) foundation
Miami and Miami Beach
Acro yoga, Thai massage and contact improv. Runs workshops, jams and teacher trainings, and publishes its own code of conduct.

Ecstatic Dance Miami · Conscious dance community (contact-adjacent)
Miami
Running since 2014, with gatherings around the full moon. Some events sequence yoga, contact improvisation and ecstatic dance in one evening, so it is a realistic way into the wider Miami movement community even though the dancing is not CI.

EXPANSION Ecstatic Dance · Conscious dance series (contact-adjacent)
Miami (Edgewater, Little Haiti, Ironside)
A recurring series with rotating venues including Boho Miami and Lion's Den. Some editions include partner embodiment work.

Love Burn · Burning Man regional festival
Miami
Miami's regional burn, held annually on Virginia Key. The place contact improvisation reaches its largest Miami audience, through Camp Contact.

Adjacent practice, honestly labelled
Different disciplines with heavily overlapping communities. Listed because a newcomer looking for this kind of movement in Miami will meet these people anyway, and because pretending otherwise would be the sort of directory that wastes your evening.
Nathan Shultz · 5Rhythms (teacher in training), breathwork, yoga
Miami Beach
Teaches at Hanu Wellness, 736 6th Street, Miami Beach. 5Rhythms is conscious movement, not contact improvisation. Listed here because the two communities overlap heavily in practice and in people.

Liliana De La Vega · 5Rhythms (certified, Waves)
Miami
Certified 5Rhythms teacher, dancing since 2018 and teaching since 2024. Works in Spanish and English. Again: a different practice, adjacent community.

Questions about the directory
Who teaches contact improvisation in Miami?
Contact improvisation has no certification body, so there is no register to consult. What could be verified when this page was last checked is one recurring all-levels class: Contact Improv — ALL LEVELS at Dance Arts Miami, Tuesdays 6:00 to 7:00 PM. Everything else runs through organisations that answer a direct message, which are listed above.
How do I get listed here?
Send the name, the city, what you teach or host, and a link to your own page. There is no fee and no membership. Listings are checked against your own published information before they go up, and each entry shows the date it was checked.
Do you list jams outside Miami?
The focus is Miami-Dade and Broward. Sessions elsewhere in Florida are linked through the CI World Jam Map, which covers the whole state and the world.
Why are 5Rhythms and ecstatic dance on a contact improvisation site?
Because they are the adjacent practices a newcomer to this kind of movement will actually meet in Miami, and because every entry is labelled with what it is. A directory that silently mixed them together would be worse than one that says so.

No fee, no membership, no committee. If you teach, host or organise in South Florida, this page exists to point at you.
